Cholinergic System and its role in cognitive process

Cholinergic is a term that refers to the molecule acetylcholine. It is usually used to define neurons, receptors or synapses that use acetylcholine, e.g. a cholinergic neuron is a neuron that releases acetylcholine, and a cholinergic receptor is a receptor to which acetylcholine binds. The signal molecule in the nervous system that is used by nerve cells to transfer information is acetylcholine. It is stored in vesicles at the ends of cholinergic (acetylcholine-producing) neurons.
It is the chief neurotransmitter in the peripheral nervous system and contracts skeletal and smooth muscle and in dilating blood vessels, increases bodily secretions, and slows heart rate. Acetylcholine can stimulate a response or block a response and thus can have excitatory or inhibitory effects. Also, acetylcholine plays a major role at the neuromuscular junction,e.g. at the joint between nerve cells and muscle. Additionally, acetylcholine is also present in the central nervous system, where it plays a role in cognitive processes such as memory, learning and arousal.

Acetylcholine in cognitive processes:
Acetylcholine plays a very important role in the Central Nervous System, acting as both a neurotransmitter and a neuromodulator. Thus, it plays a role in boosting motivation , increasing feelings of fulfillment and pleasure, and activity that relates to arousal. This interaction with motivation also refers to words and actions of us.The way that acetylcholine works in the nervous system allows it to connect thoughts with actions,turning thinking patterns into movement.Thus it can be understood that acetylcholine inactivation might lead to severe problems in the central nervous system.Likewise, too high level of it can also lead to severe problems.
Acetylcholine affects synapses which are related to memory and makes connections with experiences, allowing brain plasticity to continue storing new information. Later memories are recalled with ease when acetylcholine is available.One of the most sought-after effects of acetylcholine is the boost to concentration, promoting alertness and mental energy.Furthermore, acetylcholine also impacts our attention and concentration level.Higher amounts of acetylcholine help limit distraction.Studies show that higher involvement of acetylcholine is found in individuals who can sustain attention and concentrate for a prolonged period.
Thus, acetylcholine is a crucial neurotransmitter that plays various important functions in our brain and body. Imbalances in it can cause significant disorders in areas that are involved in memory and movement, including those that typify Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
